Charles “Chuck” Bovee is known in Sitka as a person who supported the arts and education at every turn. He was a champion of many non-profit programs including the Sitka Fine Arts Camp and the Sitka Summer Music Festival. Without Chuck's support as Sheldon Jackson College’s academic dean, it is doubtful the Camp would exist.
The Camp started unofficially in 1972 as a small music camp and in 1973 it received its official non-profit status with the mission to provide high quality arts instruction to Alaska kids. Since then, thousands of Alaska kids have attended. For many children coming from small Alaska towns, the Camp has provided opportunities in the arts that are not available in their own communities. The Camp has received national attention for its important work including being honored at a White House ceremony with former First Lady Laura Bush. Please consider making a donation in honor of Chuck Bovee to the Sitka Fine Arts Camp using the form on this page. |
